Title A name given to the resource World War Two Shadow Boxes Description An account of the resource These are Shadow boxes put together with photos, patches, medals, and pins from the time Wyman Nemecek served in the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) during World War Two. Wyman was a tail gunner and flew in forty-two missions in the South Pacific, stationed in Guadalcanal. Wyman is now the only survivor of his flight crew. The top shadow box is pictures of Wyman Nemecek (top left), his flight crew (top right and bottom), and one of he B24 bombers that his crew flew (middle). The second shadow box contains a medal Wyman received fro his service (top left), anoher picure of him (top right), his dog tags (middle left), his flight wings (middle right), and finally two patches tat represent his crew and battalion in the USAAF (bottom left and right). The name plate in the center of the second shadow box reads "SSgt Wyman L Nemecek, USAAF, 28 Jul 1943 - 26 Oct 1945, B24 Tail Gunner, 42 Missions" Wyman Nemecek is originally from Noble, OK and was born Dec. 6th, 1923. After the war, Wyman attended Oklahoma A&M, taught GI School and managed lumber yards. He came to Nebraska in 1950 and lived in the eastern part of the state. He moved to Chadron in 2013 to be near his son. Since then his wife, Helen, passed away. Wyman is proud to be the father of six, grandfather of fourteen, and great-grandfather of twenty-three. The upright steam engine, of which more than 110 different models were made, was one of two types of toy steam engines the company made. From the Weeden Catalogue listing: “It has a highly polished blued brass boiler firmly secured to a durable base. This engine is provided with a water glass with brass cocks, a reversing valve, by means of which it can be run backward or forward with equal speed. The whistle is brass. Face of balance wheel and base under engine are polished nickel.” This model was the first to have a forward and reverse lever and could be reversed while running. It sold for the price of $4.00, when introduced and $4.50 when its production ceased and could be purchased in brass, nickel plated or blued brass. These toys were tested before being packaged. Title A name given to the resource U.S. Springfield Rifle Description An account of the resource This U.S. Springfield Rifle, Krag Model 1898, 30-40 Rifle has a serial number of 118895. It was donated to the Dawes County Historical Society Museum in June of 2005 by Al Gusner. Al acquired the rifle in the will of Robert Afraid of Bear, who he had given credit to for gasoline at the Frontier Refinery Company Gas Station. It was the kindness that Al showed Robert, after Robert had told him he had lost two of his sons in WWII. Al utilized the right by shooting fourteen deer, a bear and an elk with the rifle.
