The event works as a homecoming for Native Omahans who have left the city. Those who gather for the event enjoy parades, dances, and other community events. One of the aims of Native Omaha Days is to preserve and pass on cultural and historical legacies of the North Omaha community. The newspaper clippings and montages below are part of that legacy. The pictures and articles represent many historical aspects of life in North Omaha and serve to promote both pride of past accomplishments and rememberance of past struggles. By exploring the business and advertisement or jazz and music sections of this page, it is easy to see how these clippings could instill a viewer with pride in a community that thrived in a variety of locally owned businesses and music venues. The wedding, birthday, and family sections emphasize the strength of the North Omaha community ties that still survive into the present. The youth and sports activity sections showcase the community's ability to find enjoyment even in times of segregation and oppression. These clippings also showcase North Omaha as a community that actively fought against racism and oppression. Through clubs, protests, and other modes of resistance, the community members of North Omaha were active particpants of the Civil Rights Movement and struggled to end unfair hiring practices and police brutality in their neighborhoods. This community has a legacy of hard work and community participation that yielded results. These images are parts of montages that were created by community members and are displayed during Native Omaha Days. This collection was contributed as part of the 2011 North Omaha History Harvest. A granddaughter of Swiss emigrants Gottlieb and Anna Schuetz, Emma was the first child of Dirk and Maria Sutorius. She married a recent emigrant from Germany (1908) Edo F. Harms in 1914. All three generations lived in Humboldt, Nebraska in close proximity with various relatives (Emma Sutorius's uncle John Schuetz lived right next door to her family according to the 1930 census). While the Schuetz-Sutorius family attended a German-speaking church, Emma's school was English-speaking, as this report card testifies. Another interesting detail is that the card came out of a small printing shop in Falls City, Nebraska, showing that neither the structure, nor the form or even the color of the report cards was standardized. Harms, 1925-1926 Description An account of the resource This document comes from the Family of Bill Dean Collection and belongs to the generation of Bill Dean's parents. The school report card from 1925-1926 school year illustrates that the form for school reports has largely remained unchanged for the larger part of the 20th century. The subjects, however, reflect the skills deemed necessary for the school students in that era and include Physiology, Mental Arithmetic, Bookkeeping, and Agriculture. This curriculum would equip a student living in the rural Nebraska (Harms family comes from Humboldt) with the skills necessary to find employment in the local enterprises and agriculture. Lena Harms was the eldest daughter of Edo and Emma Harms, German-Swiss Americans in Humboldt, Nebraska. Emma Harms's great-grandparents Gottlieb and Anna Schuetz came to Humboldt from Switzerland in 1870s and her both her grandmother and mother married emigrants from Germany. The date is May 15, 1864, and as it is close to Arnold Schuetz's birth, it might be a certificate that documented the payment for baptism (the official fee is printed at the bottom) or other related expenses. A son of soap manufacturers Hans (John) Schuetz and Magdalena Luthi, Gottlieb was born in 1838 in Canton Berne, Switzerland. He married Anna Parli who also came from Canton Berne, Switzerland in 1863 and immigrated to Humboldt, Nebraska in 1870. Arnold Schuetz was their first son born on February 7, 1864 in Switzerland. Their daughter Maria (Mary) Schuetz, born in 1867 in Switzerland started the Dean family line marrying German-born Dirk Sutorius in 1889. They traveled by post ship that went from Hamburg to Australia and stopped in Southhampton, Canada, New York, and South America. Jacob, the fifth child in the family was born in July of 1870, the year they moved. Gottlieb Schuetz and Anna Parli were the second maternal great-grandparents of Bill Dean and his family who shared the documents at the History Harvest.
