Littlefield served almost three years in the Civil War as a private in company C of 102nd Illinois volunteer regiment. After the war he returned to Illinois and married Hellen Crandle. In 1879 Joseph Littlefield and his family that included his mother Joanna, who was 71 at the time, came to Nebraska Clear Creek area, Sherman County to homestead. Hellen died in 1881 and six years later Joseph, now 47, married 24 year-old Lotta (Charlotte) Roberts, and had 7 more children with her, of whom only 5 survived. Littlefield moved to Aurora, Nebraska in 1904 and died there in 1911.

<p>Joseph Littlefield, pictured here next to his pharmacy on wheels near his house in Aurora, Nebraska in 1906, lived a long and eventful life. Born in Peoria County, Illinois in 1840, Littlefield served almost three years in the Civil War as a private in company C of 102nd Illinois volunteer regiment. After the war he returned to Illinois and married Hellen Crandle. In 1879 Joseph Littlefield and his family that included his mother Joanna, who was 71 at the time, came to Nebraska Clear Creek area, Sherman County to homestead. <p>Aged 63 in 1904, Joseph Littlefield could not farm any more to support his family, so he had to become a travelling salesman selling medicines.</p>
<p>The photograph comes from the collection of Terri and Dave Mabon. Dave Mabon is Joseph Littlefield's great-grandson.</p>

Ralph Orduna of the Tuskeegee Airmen
Description
An account of the resource
Ralph Orduna was born in Omaha and went to Westside Elementary and South High School. He began working at the Martin Bomber Plant sometime after it opened near Omaha in the Spring of 1941, and became the youngest supervisor at the plant. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and became a fighter pilot as one of the "Tuskeegee Airmen," the popular name for the African-American pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group in the Army Air Corps. As a member of the Tuskeegee Airmen, Mr. Orduna flew multiple recon and bomber escort missions over enemy territory. He was a member of the first all-black fighter pilot group in the 301 Fighter Squadron of the 15th Air Force's 332 Fighter Group. Following his military service, he studied for a commercial pilot’s license under the GI Bill, but was unable to gain employment, as airlines were not hiring black pilots at the time. Ralph Orduna passed away on May 27, 2003.
This collection was brought to us by Philip Orduna Reis, the son of Ralph Orduna. Phillip is active in the local chapter for Tuskeegee Airmen, and attends national conferences that seek to curate the history of the group. The Omaha chapter is named after Alfonza W. Davis, an Omaha Tech graduate who went on to be a squadron leader as a Tuskeegee Airmen, and was killed in action near the end of the war. This collection was donated at the 2011 North Omaha History Harvest.

<p>This Congressional Gold Medal was presented to Ralph Orduna’s family by Congressman Lee Terry in 2006. The medals were awarded to all members of the Tuskeegee Airmen by the United States Congress, and issued by the United States Mint. The medallion shows three airmen: an officer, a mechanic, and a pilot. On the back are three planes: a P-40, P-51, and B-25, all planes flown by the Tuskeegee Airmen.</p>

Description
An account of the resource
<p>The Civil War discharge records reveal a treasure of personal information about age, birthplace, appearance, and conduct of the soldier. Samuel L. Roberts was discharged twice, first in 1964 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to reenlist into the 15th Iowa Infantry Veteran Regiment, and then fully discharged in July 1865.</p>
<p>Born in Ohio, but living in Indianola, Iowa in 1861, Roberts was only 18 when he enlisted. The 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment where he served was mustered in 1862, and was engaged in the Battle of Shiloh, and the Second Battle of Corinth, where the Confederate army captured Roberts and later exchanged him in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Despite the pledge upon parole "not to take arms again" he probably never quit the service and in 1864 participated in the Atlanta Campaign with the 15th Iowa. The document now belongs to Roberts' granddaughters Grace Emmett and Mary Ann Hessenflow.</p>

<p>Samuel L. Roberts or his wife kept this spare Oath of Identity blank form with other documents attesting to Roberts's record in the Civil War to have it on hand in the process for applying for pension. When filled the document would testify that the person appearing before the notary is the same person whose war record would be provided.</p>

Vol. Inf. On the 24 day of Oct., 1861,
and was mustered into the United States Service as a private
for the period of 3 years on 25 day of Nov., 1861,
At Keokuk, Iowa, by Lieut, Ball, U. S. A. Mustering
Officer, and that the said Samuel L. Roberts
was wounded and taken prisoner Oct. 3, '62,

<p>Obtained from a state adjutant-general's office, proof of service record was a major document that gave a soldier a right to claim pension. If preserved, the document gives information about the soldiers name, age, place of birth, and his history in the army.</p>

Major General William T. Sherman's Farewell Address to His Army

<p>Printed on May 30, 1865 in Washington D. C. General Sherman gave out Special Field Orders, No 76 to all the men in his army as a commemoration of their wartime record. The document bears the badges of the Union Army Corps XII, XIV, XV, XVII, and XX. Sherman recalled all the great battles of the war, the courage of his army and urged the men not to yield to the temptation to "seek new adventures abroad … for it will lead only to death and disappointments."</p>

Bill Hayes shared these documents on behalf of Grace Emmett and Mary Ann Hessenflow, granddaughters of the Civil War veteran Samuel L. Roberts. The collection includes a letter of parole (Roberts was a Civil War POW), a letter Roberts sent home from the battlefront in 1864, discharge papers and other documents. Hayes shared the documents at the Nebraska City History Harvest event held at the Lewis and Clark Missouri River Basin Visitors Center on September 12, 2010.

Description
An account of the resource
<p>The Civil War discharge records reveal a treasure of personal information about age, birthplace, appearance, and conduct of the soldier. Samuel L. Roberts was discharged twice, first in 1964 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to reenlist into the 15th Iowa Infantry Veteran Regiment, and then fully discharged in July 1865.</p>
<p>Born in Ohio, but living in Indianola, Iowa in 1861, Roberts was only 18 when he enlisted. The 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment where he served was mustered in 1862, and was engaged in the Battle of Shiloh, and the Second Battle of Corinth, where the Confederate army captured Roberts and later exchanged him in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Despite the pledge upon parole "not to take arms again" he probably never quit the service and in 1864 participated in the Atlanta Campaign with the 15th Iowa.</p>
<p>The document now belongs to Roberts' granddaughters Grace Emmett and Mary Ann Hessenflow.</p>

Janice M Cleary, a lifelong resident of Omaha, Nebraska, has always enjoyed music. Her father studied voice, and her parents sang in the St. John’s choir and hosted music parties in their family home. Janice became interested in ragtime in the late 1950s, and began collecting sheet music. At first, she limited her collection the works of Irving Berlin and ragtime tunes, but her passion for sheet music soon widened in scope. Her collection has grown to nearly 50,000 pieces of American popular music. Janice shared items from her collection that were either written by Omahans or were published in Omaha. Music by Maceo Pinkard, one time Omaha booking agent, music publisher, band leader and eventual composer of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” is just one of the artists in her collection. She also has the “Happy Feeling Rag” sheet music from the legendary Dan Desdunes and the “Omaha Blues” written by Effie and Charles Tyus.
Before recorded music began to enter homes in the 1920s and 1930s, sheet music was the only way for individuals to enjoy popular music in their own homes. Pianos were popular entertainment sources for middle-class homes, and the American sheet music industry thrived during the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. Popular jazz musicians borrowed heavily from African-American culture, and the industry often depended on stereotypical depictions of African Americans and African American culture in its music, lyrics, and artwork. Some of Mrs. Cleary’s items feature the stereotypical imagery of minstrelsy.

'The Blue Melody' sheet music

<p>This “1917 Jazz Band Sensation” is an instrumental song composed by Maceo Pinkard of “Sweet Georgia Brown” fame. Janice Cleary, who owns this amazing collection, informed us that Pinkard was a booking agent in Omaha before he moved on to New York. It was dedicated to Sophie Tucker’s (5) Kings of Syncopation who popularized the tune. The song was available for player pianos and for what the publisher refers to as talking machines, better known as record players, which were just becoming popular at the time.</p>
<p>The cover of this sheet music features a photograph of Sophie Tucker’s Kings of Syncopation framed by an illustration of a man playing piano and a young couple dancing. There is an ad for another Pinkard tune, “I’m a Real Kind Mama, Looking for a Loving Man” in the sheet music and credit for his song, “Just Give Me That Ragtime Please”. The composer's own Maceo Pinkard Music Publishing in Omaha, Nebraska published the song.</p>

'I'm Going Back Home' sheet music

<p>This “Terrific Hit” song written by Maceo Pinkard of ‘Sweet Georgia Brown” fame is about a man returning to his home in “Dixie land”. He tells his girl, “Now you can stay up here and have all I’ve seen” but what he wants is to return to, “the best old land the kind I understand”. As he rides home on the train, in the reverse direction of the Great Migration, he looks forward to his arrival where “the band will play some rags”. Janice Cleary, who owns this amazing collection, informs us Pinkard was a booking agent and music publisher in Omaha before he moved on to New York. His southern roots must have inspired this tune.</p>
<p>On the cover of this sheet music is a drawing of a man standing on the back of a train illustrated by Maurice M. Leaf. There is also a photograph of Steve Clifford superimposed on the train’s railing. The sheet music bears a 1916 copyright and was published by the Dick B. Bruun Company, 11 Wright Block, Omaha Nebraska. An image of Bruun appears on the bottom of the cover along with the logo of his company, which includes a cartoon drawing of a mouse that predates the famous Mickey. He is wearing a suit looking at some sheet music, which proclaims, “Croon a Bruun Time”. There is a full page ad for Dick Bruun’s song, “Thelma Waits for Me in Norway by the Sea”, dedicated to Miss Doris Wilson, “featured in Through the Looking Glass” as well as an image of her and the Wilson Triplets. There is also a small promotion for Pinkard’s “When He Sang that Baritone”.</p>

'I Want to See My Girl in London' sheet music
Description
An account of the resource
<p>This World War I song is about a soldier’s faithfulness to his country and his girl. The lyrics use the name Tommy Atkins, a term used to denote a generic British soldier, rather than a specific individual. Tommy, “while down in a trench one day”, receives a letter from his girl Anna Shannon. While she begs to see him back in London, he pledges to remain loyal to his duty in the field. The cover of this sheet music shows a drawing of a young woman in a hat and fur collar. A small photograph of the Glendale Quartette is also featured.</p>
<p>This is another song composed by Maceo Pinkard, best know for his hit, “Sweet Georgia Brown”. Pinkard collaborated with lyricist Con T’lam and Edwin Dicey who arranged this 1916 tune for orchestra. Janice Cleary who owns this amazing collection, informs us from her research that Pinkard was a booking agent and music publisher in Omaha before he moved on to New York. The sheet music was published by Independent Music Publishing Company 850 50 23rd Street Omaha Nebraska. On the first page inside the sheet music is an advertisement for “It’s Back to Tennessee for Mine” with lyrics also by Con T’lam and composed by L. A. Clark. This ad urges music lovers to, “Buy it in Omaha” with “Popular Music” at “Popular Prices.”</p>
