After enlisting in the Navy in 1934, he was stationed at a Pacific naval base and later died in a plane crash near the area. Sam was just 28 years old. The photo is from 1907, and shows Josie and Joe on 13th and Harney street in Omaha, Ne. Their parents came from Italy, and would be Wyman's great great great grandparents. Her great great great grandfather originally came in 1885, with the first trace of him found in Joplin, MO. He came with his stepson Joe, and later Josie came with her stepmother. Joe and Josie were step-siblings, and then married each other. This side of Wyman's family is from Trabia, Sicily, while the other side is from Carlentini, Sicily. It is likely that the fruit stand read "California Fruit Stand" because the Scalettas allegedly lived in California for a short period of time, and then moved back to Omaha after an earthquake hit. The Train School was where a lot of Italian children of Omaha were educated. Josephine Lomeier brought us the picture, telling us the story of Bell Cathro, who she believed to have started teaching at just 16 years old. She taught Lomeier's oldest brother, who is 23 years older than her, and then taught Lomeier. She only needed a teaching certificate to be an educator. The photo shows Lomeier's 8th-grade graduating class. As Lomeier told us, Cathro taught so many of the Italians in Little Italy. Lomeier described the Omaha Train School fondly, explaining the significance within her family and within the Little Italy neighborhood.
