<text>Janice M Cleary, a lifelong resident of Omaha, Nebraska, has always enjoyed music. Her father studied voice, and her parents sang in the St. John’s choir and hosted music parties in their family home. Janice became interested in ragtime in the late 1950s, and began collecting sheet music. At first, she limited her collection the works of Irving Berlin and ragtime tunes, but her passion for sheet music soon widened in scope. Her collection has grown to nearly 50,000 pieces of American popular music. Janice shared items from her collection that were either written by Omahans or were published in Omaha. Music by Maceo Pinkard, one time Omaha booking agent, music publisher, band leader and eventual composer of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” is just one of the artists in her collection. She also has the “Happy Feeling Rag” sheet music from the legendary Dan Desdunes and the “Omaha Blues” written by Effie and Charles Tyus.

Before recorded music began to enter homes in the 1920s and 1930s, sheet music was the only way for individuals to enjoy popular music in their own homes. Pianos were popular entertainment sources for middle-class homes, and the American sheet music industry thrived during the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. Popular jazz musicians borrowed heavily from African-American culture, and the industry often depended on stereotypical depictions of African Americans and African American culture in its music, lyrics, and artwork. Some of Mrs. Cleary’s items feature the stereotypical imagery of minstrelsy.

<text><p>This 1917 &ldquo;cabaret song hit&rdquo;, was written and composed by Maceo Pinkard of &ldquo;Sweet Georgia Brown&rdquo; fame. Janice Cleary who owns this amazing collection, informs us Pinkard was a booking agent in Omaha before he moved on to New York. This song is about a woman who is, &ldquo;so tired of being lonely&rdquo; in a world that is, &ldquo;so awfully chancy&rdquo; for those who are looking for love. She says at night, &ldquo; I Doll up and meet enough&rdquo; but still she has not found a man with whom she can be, &ldquo;all a mama could be&rdquo;.</p>
<p>The cover of this sheet music showcases the legendary Jewish Ukrainian American singer, Sophie Tucker, known for her brassy vocals and larger than life personality. Here Tucker is billed as, &ldquo;Mary Garden of Ragtime&rdquo;. The sheet music was published by Maceo Pinkard&rsquo;s music publishing house in Omaha Nebraska. On the first page inside the sheet music is an advertisement for another one of Pinkard&rsquo;s compositions, &ldquo; The Blue Melody&rdquo;. Pinkard&rsquo;s Saxophone Orchestra of Omaha, known for their &ldquo;syncopated walk&rdquo;, is also promoted. The ad urges music lovers to look for the upcoming titles, &ldquo; When He Picks that Ragtime Music&rdquo;, &ldquo;Teach Me that Hula Hula Dance&rdquo;, &ldquo;Dip Me in Your Ocean of Love&rdquo;, &ldquo; At that Darktown Cabaret&rdquo;, and &ldquo;Take Back Your Loving, I&rsquo;m Through with You&rdquo;</p>

The song continues with, &ldquo;when he sang&mdash;the whole house rang&hellip;&rdquo;. As the story unfolds the listener learns the fate of the baritone who becomes sad, loses his voice and by extension his livelihood. Why he became sad is not revealed within the lyrics. The song mentions singing was how Malone earned his &ldquo;Jack&rdquo; which is noted at the bottom of the page to mean money in the slang of that era.</p>
<p>The cover of this sheet music shows three women, Bess, Alice, and Florence known collectively as the Cotterill sisters. Maceo Pinkard and Otis J. Walden wrote this song and it bears a 1915 copyright. Janice Cleary who owns this amazing collection, assures us Pinkard was a booking agent and music publisher in Omaha before he moved on to New York. From there he wrote the legendary tune &ldquo;Sweet Georgia Brown&rdquo;. This song was dedicated to Mr. Maceo &ldquo;Tony&rdquo; Henike. The sheet music was published by the Dick B. Bruun Company of Omaha Nebraska and printed by Rayner Dalheim and Company Music Printers of Chicago Illinois.</p>
<p>An image of Bruun appears on the bottom of the cover along with the logo of his company, which includes a cartoon drawing of a mouse that predates the famous Mickey. He is wearing a suit and looking at some sheet music, which proclaims, &ldquo;Croon a Bruun Time&rdquo;. On the first page inside the sheet music is an advertisement for other Bruun titles that sold for 15 cents each post paid. The Ad includes another Pinkard tune, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m Going Back Home&rdquo; and Brunn&rsquo;s songs, &ldquo;I&rsquo;ll Be Back&rdquo;, &ldquo; When the Milkman Comes in the Morning&rdquo;, &ldquo;Howdy Henriella&rdquo;, &ldquo; In the Smoke of My Calabash&rdquo;, &ldquo;Thelma&rdquo;, and &ldquo;Street of Dreams&rdquo;</p>

<text><p>This &ldquo;Terrific Hit&rdquo; song written by Maceo Pinkard of &lsquo;Sweet Georgia Brown&rdquo; fame is about a man returning to his home in &ldquo;Dixie land&rdquo;. He tells his girl, &ldquo; Now you can stay up here and have all I&rsquo;ve seen&rdquo; but what he wants is to return to, &ldquo;the best old land the kind I understand&rdquo;. As he rides home on the train, in the reverse direction of the Great Migration, he looks forward to his arrival where &ldquo;the band will play some rags&rdquo;. Janice Cleary, who owns this amazing collection, informs us Pinkard was a booking agent and music publisher in Omaha before he moved on to New York. His southern roots must have inspired this tune.</p>
<p>On the cover of this sheet music is a drawing of a man standing on the back of a train illustrated by Maurice M. Leaf. There is also a photograph of Steve Clifford superimposed on the train&rsquo;s railing. The sheet music bears a 1916 copyright and was published by the Dick B. Bruun Company, 11 Wright Block, Omaha Nebraska. An image of Bruun appears on the bottom of the cover along with the logo of his company, which includes a cartoon drawing of a mouse that predates the famous Mickey. He is wearing a suit looking at some sheet music, which proclaims, &ldquo;Croon a Bruun Time&rdquo;. There is a full page ad for Dick Bruun&rsquo;s song, &ldquo;Thelma Waits for Me in Norway by the Sea&rdquo;, dedicated to Miss Doris Wilson, &ldquo;featured in Through the Looking Glass&rdquo; as well as an image of her and the Wilson Triplets. There is also a small promotion for Pinkard&rsquo;s &ldquo; When He Sang that Baritone&rdquo;.</p>

<text><p>This &ldquo;1917 Jazz Band Sensation&rdquo; is an instrumental song composed by Maceo Pinkard of &ldquo;Sweet Georgia Brown&rdquo; fame. Janice Cleary, who owns this amazing collection, informed us that Pinkard was a booking agent in Omaha before he moved on to New York. It was dedicated to Sophie Tucker&rsquo;s (5) Kings of Syncopation who popularized the tune. The song was available for player pianos and for what the publisher refers to as talking machines, better known as record players, which were just becoming popular at the time.</p>
<p>The cover of this sheet music features a photograph of Sophie Tucker&rsquo;s Kings of Syncopation framed by an illustration of a man playing piano and a young couple dancing. There is an ad for another Pinkard tune, &ldquo;I&rsquo;m a Real Kind Mama, Looking for a Loving Man&rdquo; in the sheet music and credit for his song, &ldquo;Just Give Me That Ragtime Please&rdquo;. The composer's own Maceo Pinkard Music Publishing in Omaha, Nebraska published the song.</p>
