Dreamland Ballroom
Description
An account of the resource
The Dreamland Ballroom was located on the second floor of the Jewell building at 2221 North 24th Street. This ballroom in the heart of North Omaha was a popular venue for many jazz musicians and the Dreamland Ballroom held some of the greatest acts during its hayday in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s until its closing in 1965. Many of these acts included Louis Armstrong, The Count Baise Band, Preston Love Sr., Dizzy Gillespie, and Anna Mae Winburn and The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, just to name a few! The Dreamland Ballroom was known to be one of the best places to see live jazz music in Nebraska.
This collection of images includes publicity shots of several bands and musicians that performed at the Dreamland Ballroom, and photographs of the performances and the auidence members enjoying the music. These images portray the essence of the Dreamland Ballroom and its importance to the music scene of North Omaha. This collection was contributed at the 2011 North Omaha History Harvest.

This large poster is on display at Big Mama’s, and shows her at the restaurant with the show’s host, Guy Fieri. Patricia Barron created Big Mama's Kitchen to provide traditional African American home-cooking and a comfortable atmosphere in North Omaha. Several dishes are based on family recipes and named after local landmarks. Big Mama's Kitchen is also an important community meeting place. The restaurant has been featured on television on Travel Channel’s "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives" and Sundance Channel’s "Ludo Bites America."

<p>This a notice announcing the birth and death in four days of the daughter of John Schuetz and his wife Anna, printed in the German-language newspaper published in Humboldt, Nebraska. Born in 1875, a sixth child in the family of Swiss emigrants Gottlieb and Anna Schuetz, John Schuetz married at 26, probably after he became sure of his ability to support a family. The note probably dates to 1902, a year after the marriage</p>
<p>This clipping comes from the Family of Bill Dean collection, the fifth generation of Gottlieb and Anna Schuetz's descendants.</p>
