Title A name given to the resource Death Notice, Julia Emma Kleber, 1899 Description An account of the resource The Family of Bill Dean collection includes many death notices cut out of mostly German-language newspapers. This obituary tells of Julia Emma Kleber's death at the age of 37 of emaciation. Born in 1862 in Illinois, she married Albert Augutus Kleber in 1880 and had four children with him. She was survived by her husband and children, her mother and siblings. While in earlier obituaries one can see the last exclamations of the diseased made in German, this one is gives the last exclamation in English, showing the gradual Americanization of the German Americans despite all the efforts of sustaining the German-language culture. Julia might have been a family or church friend of the Schuetz-Sutorius-Harmses, maternal ancestors of Bill Dean. Lydia might have been a family or church friend of the Schuetz-Sutorius-Harmses, maternal ancestors of Bill Dean. She might have been an elder sister of Laura Pauline Richers. The family began with Gottlieb Schuetz and Anna Parli who came from Canton Berne, Switzerland to Humboldt, Nebraska in 1870. A son of soap manufacturers Hans (John) Schuetz and Magdalena Luthi, Gottlieb was born in 1838 in Canton Berne, Switzerland. He married Anna Parli, also from Canton Berne, in 1863 and immigrated to Humboldt, Nebraska in 1870. Their daughter Maria (Mary) Schuetz, born in 1867 in Switzerland started the Dean family line marrying German-born Dirk Sutorius in 1889. Sutorius' daughter Emma, born in 1890 married a recent emigrant from Germany (1908) Edo F. Harms in 1914. All three generations lived in Humboldt, Nebraska in close proximity with various relatives (Emma Sutorius's uncle John Schuetz lived right next door to her family according to the 1930 census). First settled in 1855, Humboldt, Nebraska is very close to the Nebraska borders with the three states: Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas. The town was a home to a vibrant immigrant community uniting people from Germany, Switzerland, Bohemia, and later Czechoslovakia, England, and various other places in the United States and beyond. This obituary tells of David Speiser's death of lung fever. Born in Kehl, Baden in 1827, he married Elizabeth Uhri and had five children with her, four of whom survived him. Title A name given to the resource Ralph Orduna of the Tuskeegee Airmen Description An account of the resource Ralph Orduna was born in Omaha and went to Westside Elementary and South High School. He began working at the Martin Bomber Plant sometime after it opened near Omaha in the Spring of 1941, and became the youngest supervisor at the plant. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and became a fighter pilot as one of the "Tuskeegee Airmen," the popular name for the African-American pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group in the Army Air Corps. As a member of the Tuskeegee Airmen, Mr. Orduna flew multiple recon and bomber escort missions over enemy territory. He was a member of the first all-black fighter pilot group in the 301 Fighter Squadron of the 15th Air Force's 332 Fighter Group. Following his military service, he studied for a commercial pilot’s license under the GI Bill, but was unable to gain employment, as airlines were not hiring black pilots at the time. Ralph Orduna passed away on May 27, 2003. This collection was brought to us by Philip Orduna Reis, the son of Ralph Orduna. Phillip is active in the local chapter for Tuskeegee Airmen, and attends national conferences that seek to curate the history of the group. The Omaha chapter is named after Alfonza W. Davis, an Omaha Tech graduate who went on to be a squadron leader as a Tuskeegee Airmen, and was killed in action near the end of the war. This collection was donated at the 2011 North Omaha History Harvest. Title A name given to the resource Janice Cleary Description An account of the resource Janice M Cleary, a lifelong resident of Omaha, Nebraska, has always enjoyed music. Her father studied voice, and her parents sang in the St. John’s choir and hosted music parties in their family home. Janice became interested in ragtime in the late 1950s, and began collecting sheet music. At first, she limited her collection the works of Irving Berlin and ragtime tunes, but her passion for sheet music soon widened in scope. Her collection has grown to nearly 50,000 pieces of American popular music. Janice shared items from her collection that were either written by Omahans or were published in Omaha. Music by Maceo Pinkard, one time Omaha booking agent, music publisher, band leader and eventual composer of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” is just one of the artists in her collection. She also has the “Happy Feeling Rag” sheet music from the legendary Dan Desdunes and the “Omaha Blues” written by Effie and Charles Tyus. Before recorded music began to enter homes in the 1920s and 1930s, sheet music was the only way for individuals to enjoy popular music in their own homes. Pianos were popular entertainment sources for middle-class homes, and the American sheet music industry thrived during the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. Popular jazz musicians borrowed heavily from African-American culture, and the industry often depended on stereotypical depictions of African Americans and African American culture in its music, lyrics, and artwork. Usef was leader of people in the Nuba Mountains. He was chosen to be a leader by the people and was held with great respect according to Mengistu. Usef was leader of people in the Nuba Mountains. He was chosen to be a leader by the people and was held with great respect according to Mengistu. Different regions had different tribes, and the people who were allowed to leaders in these groups allied together against the government of Northern Sudan. Usef was known for his teachings as well as travelling from country to country to seek aid for his people. Title A name given to the resource Karen Scarves from Thailand Description An account of the resource These are hand woven scarves brought to us by Peh Wah Mu, a refugee from Burma who now lives in Lincoln, NE. The scarves were made by hand from cotton by women in refugee camps in Thailand. These scarves are worn by women either over their shoulders or over their heads.
