One of her younger siblings was born in the refugee camp, and another was born in the United States. Her family was unable to bring very much with them, but they shared some of the items. This collection was contributed as part of the 2012 Lincoln Refugee History Harvest.

An account of the resource
<p>This gold ring was a gift to Shams Al-Badry's mother by Shams's grandmother. Ms. Al-Badry's mother received the ring while in the Saudi Arabia refugee camp, and was sent through a third party. The ring was one of very few possessions that her mother was able to retain through her move to the United States.</p>

<p>The tea, saucer, and tray are representative of Ms. Al-Badry's native Iraqi culture. During our interview in Ms. Al-Badry's home, her mother provided refreshments, including Iraqi tea. The saucer is used for special occasions, such as having guests in the home. Ms. Al-Badry told us that in Iraqi culture, the first things guest get is tea. This set was brought from Iraq by Ms. Al-Badry's mother on one of her recent trips to Iraq.</p>

<p>This a picture of Shams Al-Badry, approximately age 2, being held by her mother (not pictured because she is not wearing a hijab). This photo was taken in their tent in the Iraqi refugee camp in Saudi Arabia.</p>
<p>Ms. Al-Badry said it was not the typical image from a refugee camp, because the tent had air-conditioning and other amenities. Ms. Al-Badry's family has moved many times, and her family has been unable to save many of their pictures from this time period. This photograph was given to her mother by a family in Michigan that has spent time at the same refugee camp.</p>

<p>Peh Wah Mu shared her traditional Karen clothing, scarves, and the Karen flag. Peh Wah Mu is originally from Burma, and spent twenty-five years in a Thailand refugee camp before moving to Lincoln, NE in 2009. In this video, Peh Wah Mu explains the meaning inherent in her clothing, as well as the symbolism and meaning of the Karen flag. The materials were hand-woven by groups of women, who sell their crafts to others. Karen residents of Lincoln often wear this traditional clothing, though many wear common American clothing as well.</p>

<p><span>Peh Wah Mu is originally from Burma, and spent twenty-five years in a Thailand refugee camp before moving to Lincoln, NE in 2009. In this video, Peh Wah and her interpreter, Martha, discuss their relationship and Peh Wah's education in the United States. This is the front and back of a dollar, which is likely part of a short snorter, from the Eugene Sengstake collections. This collection is donated by Eugene Wagner Sengstake Jr. A short snorter is a banknote which was signed by various persons travelling together or meeting up at different events and records who was met. The tradition was started by bush pilots in Alaska in the 1920's and subsequently spread through the growth of military and commercial aviation. Often times soldiers would add a new bill to their short snorter each time he visited a new country. Dated March 16 1944, this one-dollar Hawaii US Dollar seems to contain nine signatures. Among the signed names, Sengstake's name appeared in the third column from the right. <br /><br />Eugene Wagner Sengstake Sr. of Lincoln, Nebraska, served in the 110th Medical Regiment and later as a B-24 pilot. An account of the resource
This letter is from Eugene Sengstake Sr.'s brother to Major Glenn E. Cole inquiring more details about Sengstake's fate following being reported missing in action in the South Pacific on June 9, 1944. In the letter, Sengstake's brother says he is working with Major Phillip Conti, who will help Sengstake's family recreate the flight path and give them a better understanding of what happened to Eugene in his fatal crash.
Sengstake's brother asks Major Cole where the bad weather occurred, where Sengstake's plane was last seen, if he completed his mission and was returning to base, if Sengstake had any contact with any other planes, and if Sengstake may have a prisoner of war.
This collection contains the personal belongings of Eugene Sengstake of the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1941-1944. He was killed in action on June 9, 1944 in the South Pacific.
