This collection features photographs, letters, newspapers, school memorabilia and Maasdam's ancestor's history from the 1880's to 1920. The family lived in North Bend and Morse Bluff, Nebraska. This collection also includes a photograph of Suzette LaFlesche Tibbles, daughter of "Iron Eye" LaFlesche, former chief of the Omaha Indian Tribe. This collection was contributed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln spring 2014 History Harvest.

Native Omaha Days

An account of the resource
Native Omaha Days is a bi-annual community event that was established in 1976. The event works as a homecoming for Native Omahans who have left the city. Those who gather for the event enjoy parades, dances, and other community events. One of the aims of Native Omaha Days is to preserve and pass on cultural and historical legacies of the North Omaha community. The newspaper clippings and montages below are part of that legacy. The pictures and articles represent many historical aspects of life in North Omaha and serve to promote both pride of past accomplishments and rememberance of past struggles.
By exploring the business and advertisement or jazz and music sections of this page, it is easy to see how these clippings could instill a viewer with pride in a community that thrived in a variety of locally owned businesses and music venues. The wedding, birthday, and family sections emphasize the strength of the North Omaha community ties that still survive into the present. The youth and sports activity sections showcase the community's ability to find enjoyment even in times of segregation and oppression.
These clippings also showcase North Omaha as a community that actively fought against racism and oppression. Through clubs, protests, and other modes of resistance, the community members of North Omaha were active particpants of the Civil Rights Movement and struggled to end unfair hiring practices and police brutality in their neighborhoods. This community has a legacy of hard work and community participation that yielded results.
These images are parts of montages that were created by community members and are displayed during Native Omaha Days. This collection was contributed as part of the 2011 North Omaha History Harvest.

Littlefield served almost three years in the Civil War as a private in company C of 102nd Illinois volunteer regiment. After the war he returned to Illinois and married Hellen Crandle. In 1879 Joseph Littlefield and his family that included his mother Joanna, who was 71 at the time, came to Nebraska Clear Creek area, Sherman County to homestead. Hellen died in 1881 and six years later Joseph, now 47, married 24 year-old Lotta (Charlotte) Roberts, and had 7 more children with her, of whom only 5 survived. Littlefield moved to Aurora, Nebraska in 1904 and died there in 1911.

<p>Joseph Littlefield, pictured here in a jacket, a bow tie, and wearing a GAR badge, lived a long and eventful life. Born in Peoria County, Illinois in 1840, Littlefield served almost three years in the Civil War as a private in company C of 102nd Illinois volunteer regiment. After the war he returned to Illinois and married Hellen Crandle. In 1879 Joseph Littlefield and his family that included his mother Joanna, who was 71 at the time, came to Nebraska Clear Creek area, Sherman County to homestead. Hellen died in 1881 and six years later Joseph, now 47, married 24 year-old Lotta (Charlotte) Roberts, and had 7 more children with her, of whom only 5 survived. Littlefield moved to Aurora, Nebraska in 1904 and died there in 1911.</p>
<p>After the war Littlefield was very active in the local Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) chapters, always travelling to the veterans' meetings wherever he was. In this photograph he is wearing his GAR badge, a five-point star made of bronze of cannons captured in the Civil War battles and connected with the clasp by the American flag. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization of the Union Civil War veterans founded in 1866 in Decatur Illinois and dissolved in 1956 when the last GAR member died.</p>
<p>The photograph, probably dating back to the 1870s, comes from the collection of Terri and Dave Mabon. Dave Mabon is Joseph Littlefield's great-grandson.</p>

<p>Joseph Littlefield, pictured here in a jacket, a bow tie, and wearing a GAR badge, lived a long and eventful life.Born in Peoria County, Illinois in 1840, Littlefield served almost three years in the Civil War as a private in company C of 102nd Illinois volunteer regiment. After the war he returned to Illinois and married Hellen Crandle. In 1879 Joseph Littlefield and his family that included his mother Joanna, who was 71 at the time, came to Nebraska Clear Creek area, Sherman County to homestead. Hellen died in 1881 and six years later Joseph, now 47, married 24 year-old Lotta (Charlotte) Roberts, and had 7 more children with her, of whom only 5 survived. Littlefield moved to Aurora, Nebraska in 1904 and died there in 1911.</p>
<p>After the war Littlefield was very active in the local Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) chapters, always travelling to the veterans' meetings wherever he was. In this photograph he is wearing his GAR badge, a five-point star made of bronze of cannons captured in the Civil War battles and connected with the clasp by the American flag. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization of the Union Civil War veterans founded in 1866 in Decatur Illinois and dissolved in 1956 when the last GAR member died.</p>
<p>The photograph, probably dating back to the 1870s, comes from the collection of Terri and Dave Mabon. Dave Mabon is Joseph Littlefield's great-grandson.</p>

Terri and Dave Mabon shared documents and photographs of Dave Mabon's great-grandparents Joseph and Charlotte Littlefield at the Nebraska City History Harvest event held at the Lewis and Clark Missouri River Basin Visitors Center on September 12, 2010. The documents include Joseph Littlefield's Civil War records, Joseph and Charlotte's photographs taken at different periods of their life, Charlotte's correspondence with her sister and her daughter Josephine, and Josephine and her future husband's photos from Aurora High School.

<p>Joseph Littlefield, pictured here sitting in the front row, second from the left was a member of the Prairieville Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) chapter while he homesteaded in the Clear Creek area and always travelling to the veterans' meetings and reunions, like the one memorialized here. In this photograph he is wearing his GAR badge, a five-point star made of bronze of cannons captured in the Civil War battles and connected with the clasp by the American flag.</p>
<p>The Grand Army of the Republic was one of the more populous Civil War veterans' organizations, founded in 1866 in Decatur Illinois and dissolved in 1956 when the last GAR member died. At its height in the 1880s and 1890s GAR was a powerful instrument of establishing veterans' pensions and other benefits, and lobbying nationalist and regionalist agenda in politics.</p>
