Native Omaha Days
Description
An account of the resource
Native Omaha Days is a bi-annual community event that was established in 1976. The event works as a homecoming for Native Omahans who have left the city. Those who gather for the event enjoy parades, dances, and other community events. One of the aims of Native Omaha Days is to preserve and pass on cultural and historical legacies of the North Omaha community. The newspaper clippings and montages below are part of that legacy. The pictures and articles represent many historical aspects of life in North Omaha and serve to promote both pride of past accomplishments and rememberance of past struggles.
By exploring the business and advertisement or jazz and music sections of this page, it is easy to see how these clippings could instill a viewer with pride in a community that thrived in a variety of locally owned businesses and music venues. The wedding, birthday, and family sections emphasize the strength of the North Omaha community ties that still survive into the present. The youth and sports activity sections showcase the community's ability to find enjoyment even in times of segregation and oppression.
These clippings also showcase North Omaha as a community that actively fought against racism and oppression. Through clubs, protests, and other modes of resistance, the community members of North Omaha were active particpants of the Civil Rights Movement and struggled to end unfair hiring practices and police brutality in their neighborhoods. This community has a legacy of hard work and community participation that yielded results.
These images are parts of montages that were created by community members and are displayed during Native Omaha Days. This collection was contributed as part of the 2011 North Omaha History Harvest.

This collage from the Omaha Star includes an article on the Mayor's Bi-Racial Committee, a photo of a priest, and a police squad car.
The article reads,
We the members of the Omaha Archdiocesan Catholic Interracial Council stat in spirit and in action with Archbishop Gerald T. (?)'s statement of policy (July 3, 1963) regarding Fair Employment and Open Occupancy in Housing. We strongly recommend the following actions to the Omaha Bi-Racial Committee:
Employment:
1. The employers represent on this committee should publicize their policy of fair employment through Omaha Public and Private high school and college counselors. They should distribute a list of jobs currently available and the projected outlook for the next 10 years. This list should also include the academic or special training requirements for each occupation.
2. The Committee should make a positive attempt to break through the trades and crafts minority employment barrier.
3. The employers on this committee should initiate a recruitment program to secure qualified Negro college graduates for employment in the Engineering, Accounting and Personnel Fields and for Management Training Programs.
4. The employers on this committee should inform employment agencies that they are not in a prospective employee's color.
5. The Committee should assist Negroes, Indians, or other members of racial minority groups to overcome the handicap of past discriminatory practices. This assistance could be in the form granting loans to students, scholarships, or similar assistance...
6. The Committee should issue reports of progress quarterly to the Omaha Community.
Housing:
1. The Bi-Racial Committee should adopt a resolution of Open Occupancy for Omaha Housing.
2. The Omaha Real Estate Board should also adopt an Open Occupancy for Omaha Housing.
3. The Omaha Real Estate Board must accept licensed Negro realtors of Omaha as members.
4. The City Council, with the backing of this committee, should pass a Fair Housing Ordinance of substance and courage.
5. This committee should obtain and distribute literature on "What to do in a racially changing neighborhood." (Aimed at stemming panic selling).
General:
1. We strongly feel that the Mayor should immediately hire a full-time professional staff person and a secretary to work with the Human Relations Board.
2. The Businesses and groups represented on this Bi-Racial Committee should, for a definite period, donate some of their employees to form a staff to implement the decisions of this committee.

Description

Black baseball was popular throughout the Midwest during the mid-20th century, including Omaha. It provided a social outlet for community members, opportunities for skilled ballplayers, and entrepreneurial possibilities for team owners. Many black baseball teams were sponsored by local industries, like the Storz Brewery, which sponsored these “City Champs” in 1944.

The Great Plains Black History Museum is dedicated to commemorating the historical and cultural achievements of people of African ancestry throughout the world. Black firefighters have a long history in Omaha, stretching back more than 100 years to the 1890s. Initially segregated, the Omaha Fire Department formally integrated its force in 1954, the same year as the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision.
