Ralph Orduna of the Tuskeegee Airmen
Description
An account of the resource
Ralph Orduna was born in Omaha and went to Westside Elementary and South High School. He began working at the Martin Bomber Plant sometime after it opened near Omaha in the Spring of 1941, and became the youngest supervisor at the plant. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and became a fighter pilot as one of the "Tuskeegee Airmen," the popular name for the African-American pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group in the Army Air Corps. As a member of the Tuskeegee Airmen, Mr. Orduna flew multiple recon and bomber escort missions over enemy territory. He was a member of the first all-black fighter pilot group in the 301 Fighter Squadron of the 15th Air Force's 332 Fighter Group. Following his military service, he studied for a commercial pilot’s license under the GI Bill, but was unable to gain employment, as airlines were not hiring black pilots at the time. Ralph Orduna passed away on May 27, 2003.
This collection was brought to us by Philip Orduna Reis, the son of Ralph Orduna. Phillip is active in the local chapter for Tuskeegee Airmen, and attends national conferences that seek to curate the history of the group. The Omaha chapter is named after Alfonza W. Davis, an Omaha Tech graduate who went on to be a squadron leader as a Tuskeegee Airmen, and was killed in action near the end of the war. This collection was donated at the 2011 North Omaha History Harvest.

<p>This photo shows fighter pilot Ralph Orduna in the cockpit of a training aircraft surrounded by other members of the 332 Fighter Group. Mr. Orduna’s son Philip informs us that he trained other pilots after earning his wings. </p>
<p>Orduna was a 2nd Lieutenant pilot during World War 2 as one of the "Tuskeegee Airmen". He was part of the 301 Fighter Squadron of the 15th Air Force's 332 Fighter Group which was the first all-black combat fighter group.</p>

Janice M Cleary, a lifelong resident of Omaha, Nebraska, has always enjoyed music. Her father studied voice, and her parents sang in the St. John’s choir and hosted music parties in their family home. Janice became interested in ragtime in the late 1950s, and began collecting sheet music. At first, she limited her collection the works of Irving Berlin and ragtime tunes, but her passion for sheet music soon widened in scope. Her collection has grown to nearly 50,000 pieces of American popular music. Janice shared items from her collection that were either written by Omahans or were published in Omaha. Music by Maceo Pinkard, one time Omaha booking agent, music publisher, band leader and eventual composer of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” is just one of the artists in her collection. She also has the “Happy Feeling Rag” sheet music from the legendary Dan Desdunes and the “Omaha Blues” written by Effie and Charles Tyus.
Before recorded music began to enter homes in the 1920s and 1930s, sheet music was the only way for individuals to enjoy popular music in their own homes. Pianos were popular entertainment sources for middle-class homes, and the American sheet music industry thrived during the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. Popular jazz musicians borrowed heavily from African-American culture, and the industry often depended on stereotypical depictions of African Americans and African American culture in its music, lyrics, and artwork. Some of Mrs. Cleary’s items feature the stereotypical imagery of minstrelsy.

'When He Sang that Baritone He Sang Some Bear' sheet music

<p>This pre-World War I song is about a baritone singer named William Washington Malone who, “Made them get so hot, they’d rag a new fox trot. The girls would Salome, they all would come and fetch the mo’ to hear old William Washington Malone”. The song continues with, “when he sang—the whole house rang…”. As the story unfolds the listener learns the fate of the baritone who becomes sad, loses his voice and by extension his livelihood. Why he became sad is not revealed within the lyrics. The song mentions singing was how Malone earned his “Jack” which is noted at the bottom of the page to mean money in the slang of that era.</p>
<p>The cover of this sheet music shows three women, Bess, Alice, and Florence known collectively as the Cotterill sisters. Maceo Pinkard and Otis J. Walden wrote this song and it bears a 1915 copyright. Janice Cleary who owns this amazing collection, assures us Pinkard was a booking agent and music publisher in Omaha before he moved on to New York. From there he wrote the legendary tune “Sweet Georgia Brown”. This song was dedicated to Mr. Maceo “Tony” Henike. The sheet music was published by the Dick B. Bruun Company of Omaha Nebraska and printed by Rayner Dalheim and Company Music Printers of Chicago Illinois.</p>
<p>An image of Bruun appears on the bottom of the cover along with the logo of his company, which includes a cartoon drawing of a mouse that predates the famous Mickey. He is wearing a suit and looking at some sheet music, which proclaims, “Croon a Bruun Time”. On the first page inside the sheet music is an advertisement for other Bruun titles that sold for 15 cents each post paid. The Ad includes another Pinkard tune, “I’m Going Back Home” and Brunn’s songs, “I’ll Be Back”, “When the Milkman Comes in the Morning”, “Howdy Henriella”, “In the Smoke of My Calabash”, “Thelma”, and “Street of Dreams”</p>

'Omaha Blues' sheet music

<p>A man’s longing for his hometown, the city of Omaha Nebraska, inspires this post World War I blues song, printed as sheet music. The song is about his dreams of returning to Omaha after a life of roaming and his desire to settle down near his parents back at home. He praises, “The folks in Omaha” who, “are nice and kind”. He goes on about his love back in Omaha describing her as, “just as sweet as any peach from a tree”. This man’s desire for home and all the people there drives him to return there even if as he says, “I have to walk”.</p>
<p>Effie Tyus and Charles Tyus wrote the music and lyrics of “Omaha Blues”. Janice Cleary who owns this amazing collection believes Effie and Charles Tyus were entertainers. The song has a 1924 copyright held by the Clarence Williams Music Publishing Company, of 1547 Broadway, New York, New York.</p>

“I’m Free, Single, Disengaged, Looking For Someone to Love” Sheet Music

<p>This post-World War I foxtrot is about a person looking for a “sweetie” who would, “Buzz around me like a Bumble Bee”. The lyrics mention being blue and suffering sleepless nights, “Regretting the day that I was born” and pleading, “won’t someone come and take a chance with me”. Near the end of the song the lyrics beg, “Lots of loving is what I crave, Love me when I’m dead and in my grave” implying this person is looking for a partner not just a quick romance. Within the song there are no clear clues as to the gender of this sad person looking for love in the transitional period immediately following World War I. </p>
<p>The cover of this sheet music shows a photograph of a woman seated at an upright piano in what is probably the home’s parlor. The parlor was the best room in the house and oftentimes contained a piano. The parlor functioned as the place where home entertainment, such entertaining guests and the playing of piano music, centered in the home. On the top of the piano is fancy decorative pottery and glassware that was popular in that period, signaling this room was reserved for the very best things a family possessed. The duos name’s Tyus and Tyus are superimposed on the piano scarf, which suggests the woman at the piano and the man standing at the right, are the composers. Janice Cleary who owns this amazing collection believes Effie and Charles Tyus were entertainers.</p>
<p>The woman is wearing a typical dress from the immediate post World War I era yet the man is outfitted in a top hat and tuxedo. This implies by playing this song, the wider world of exciting entertainment enters a family’s parlor. The man is in blackface, which comes from the minstrel tradition where entertainers both African American and white would apply a layer of burnt cork, shoe polish, or other black substances to their faces and exaggerate their lips and other features with makeup. The use of Blackface reinforced negative stereotypes about African Americans. In the post World War I era, many people viewed these exaggerated images as factual rather than a farcical vehicle of popular entertainment. </p>
<p>Charles Jefferson Tyus wrote the lyrics and Effie Tyus wrote the music published by Tyus and Tyus Music Publishing Company. The song is copyrighted to Charles Jefferson Tyus Music Company, 2524 Patrick Avenue, Omaha Nebraska. The back page of the sheet music includes a promotion for forthcoming Tyus and Tyus Music Publishing Company songs. The listing includes, “I Just Can’t Live Without You, Dearie!”, “I’m Tired Living in this Pig-Iron World Alone!”, “I’m Jazz Crazy, Too!”, and “I Want to Go Back to the Farm!”.</p>

Native Omaha Days
Description
An account of the resource
Native Omaha Days is a bi-annual community event that was established in 1976. The event works as a homecoming for Native Omahans who have left the city. Those who gather for the event enjoy parades, dances, and other community events. One of the aims of Native Omaha Days is to preserve and pass on cultural and historical legacies of the North Omaha community. The newspaper clippings and montages below are part of that legacy. The pictures and articles represent many historical aspects of life in North Omaha and serve to promote both pride of past accomplishments and rememberance of past struggles.
By exploring the business and advertisement or jazz and music sections of this page, it is easy to see how these clippings could instill a viewer with pride in a community that thrived in a variety of locally owned businesses and music venues. The wedding, birthday, and family sections emphasize the strength of the North Omaha community ties that still survive into the present. The youth and sports activity sections showcase the community's ability to find enjoyment even in times of segregation and oppression.
These clippings also showcase North Omaha as a community that actively fought against racism and oppression. Through clubs, protests, and other modes of resistance, the community members of North Omaha were active particpants of the Civil Rights Movement and struggled to end unfair hiring practices and police brutality in their neighborhoods. This community has a legacy of hard work and community participation that yielded results.
These images are parts of montages that were created by community members and are displayed during Native Omaha Days. This collection was contributed as part of the 2011 North Omaha History Harvest.

Janice M Cleary, a lifelong resident of Omaha, Nebraska, has always enjoyed music. Her father studied voice, and her parents sang in the St. John’s choir and hosted music parties in their family home. Janice became interested in ragtime in the late 1950s, and began collecting sheet music. At first, she limited her collection the works of Irving Berlin and ragtime tunes, but her passion for sheet music soon widened in scope. Her collection has grown to nearly 50,000 pieces of American popular music. Janice shared items from her collection that were either written by Omahans or were published in Omaha. Music by Maceo Pinkard, one time Omaha booking agent, music publisher, band leader and eventual composer of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” is just one of the artists in her collection. She also has the “Happy Feeling Rag” sheet music from the legendary Dan Desdunes and the “Omaha Blues” written by Effie and Charles Tyus.
Before recorded music began to enter homes in the 1920s and 1930s, sheet music was the only way for individuals to enjoy popular music in their own homes. Pianos were popular entertainment sources for middle-class homes, and the American sheet music industry thrived during the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. Popular jazz musicians borrowed heavily from African-American culture, and the industry often depended on stereotypical depictions of African Americans and African American culture in its music, lyrics, and artwork. Some of Mrs. Cleary’s items feature the stereotypical imagery of minstrelsy.

'Alibi-ing Papa' sheet music

<p>“Alibi-ing Papa” is about a woman who is fed up with her husband’s nights spent away from the family and the lies he tells to cover up his nocturnal adventures. The narrative takes place in Mobile, Alabama where alibing Sam always tells his wife he has a lodge meeting when she wants him to do things like, “come and go with her and the kiddies to a movie show”. This nameless wife threatens to, “get a pistol, I don’t care what it costs” to keep in the house. But she knows he prefers being, “ out with the women trying to be a sheik” in what may be a reference to the French-Italian American actor Rudolph Valetino’s famous movie character the Sheik. In the 1920s the term Sheik became slang for a womanizer, which according to his wife fit Sam’s character.</p>
<p>“Alibi-ing Papa” was composed by Effie Tyus and Charles Tyus who also wrote the music and lyrics of “Omaha Blues” 1924 and “I’m Free, Single, Disengaged, Looking For Someone to Love” 1919. Janice Cleary who owns this amazing collection believes Effie and Charles Tyus were entertainers. The song has a 1927 copyright held by W. C. Handy Music Publisher, of 1547 Broadway, New York, New York. The sheet music does not indicate any Omaha address like the other compositions by the Tyus team. Unlike “I’m Free, Single, Disengaged, Looking For Someone to Love” this publication does not have any artwork on its cover or additional promotions of the artists’ other work.</p>

<p>Issued to a drover overseeing transportation of cattle from the Omaha market to Axtell, this ticket is one of the rare documents of the turn of the 20th century railroad operations. Unlike a passenger ticket, the drover's ticket featured a list of physical descriptions to be marked, so that no random person riding in the cattle car could appropriate it. Thus we learn that F. J. Nelson (Ms Wilberger's grandfather) was of medium size and height with light hair and a moustache. Unlike modern descriptions that usually feature eye-color, this one provides for the description of the facial hair, a more prominent characteristic. It also tells historians that all cattle drovers were men.</p>
<p>In 1900 Omaha had already established its reputation of one of the major livestock exchange and stockyard site west of Chicago, the largest stockyards in the world at the time.</p>
<p>This ticket is for the Burlington Route of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, a branch of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company. Built in the 1850s to cross Iowa the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad initially had a terminus at Council Bluffs, but later the railroad extended a line from Omaha all the way to Denver. It is not clear whether Axtell, Nebraska is now a small town not far from the Kearney Junction of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad in Nebraska.</p>

<p>These two admission tickets a Chautauqua event, organized by a recently established (1898) Texas-Colorado Chautauqua Association belonged to F.J. Nelson of Axtell, Nebraska. Chautauqua is an institute of short two-three week schools for popular adult Christian education a Sunday School organizer John Heyl Vincent and businessman Lewis Miller started in 1874 on the shores of lake Chautauqua in New York. As its popularity grew, other educators and benefactors established independent or daughter Chautauquas in other parts of the country, usually in the picturesque scenic places on the outskirts of a larger town within an easy trip from the railroad station. Lectures, music, and other arts always occupied a central role in a Chautauqua experience attracting a large number of patrons from rural areas with few other opportunities to access education and quality entertainment. This, no doubt, was a major event for Betty Wilberger's grandfather F. J. Nelson who came to the August 3 1899 event in Denver from Axtell, Nebraska. A link between Texas and Colorado in 1899, Colorado and Southern Railway became a part of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad in 1908.</p>

Warren Taylor
Description
An account of the resource
Mr. Warren Taylor shared items from three distinct locations and time periods: a 1925 Business Guide produced by the Colored Commercial Club of Omaha, homestead documents from early twentieth century Wyoming, and artifacts from his ancestors’ enslavement in mid-nineteenth century Mississippi. A friend gave the Business Guide to Mr. Taylor, but the other two collections are family heirlooms.
The Business Guide provides valuable insight into Jim Crow-era Omaha. The book illustrates that segregation between the black and white communities was able to exist without legal segregation codes. Mr. Taylor commented that a number of those businesses in the guide remained until the riots of 1968, after which a significant number closed their doors.
The Homestead Act documents contain dated certificates of land registration and land deeds, as well as some other documents from Mr. Taylor’s paternal grandfather and granduncle, Russel Taylor and Otis Taylor, respectively. The brothers both homesteaded in Wyoming for a time, but moved back to Nebraska due to the inability to maintain livelihood with the poor soil of the region.
Mr. Taylor’s family heirloom collection contains photographs of both a penny from 1840 and a cup owned by Mr. Taylor’s great-great-grandmother. Warren Taylor’s grandaunt created handwritten notes to accompany both artifacts, and have also been handed down to him. The notes themselves hold a great deal of meaning to his family, as Mr. Taylor’s grandaunt was the daughter of a formerly enslaved person, and learned to read and write in church, later becoming a church orator. This collections was contributed at the North Omaha History Harvest in 2011.

<p>Mr. Warren Taylor provided some homesteading documentation from his paternal grandfather, Russel Taylor. This is Russel Taylor's homestead application, approved for 160 acres of land near Cheyenne, Wyoming on May 20th, 1913. Wyoming had a large community of African American homesteaders, which was a motivation of Russel's to move. He hoped to farm the land, while also working as a school teacher. The land proved poor for farming, and Russel and his wife Henrietta later migrated to Omaha with a large portion of the African American community from Wyoming.</p>
