Dr. Roger Davis of the University of Nebraska at Kearney gave the statue to Jinny Turman in 2013 as a gift since she came to UNK from West Virginia University. Davis received the owl from his mother who collected owl statues. He estimated that she obtained the coal owl between 1978 and 1980. The underside of the statue is marked with a number, 149, and sticker reading, "Handcrafted from W. Virginia Coal." The statue is 3 1/2" tall and 2 1/8" wide at the ears, its widest point.</text>
