Janice Cleary
Description
An account of the resource
Janice M Cleary, a lifelong resident of Omaha, Nebraska, has always enjoyed music. Her father studied voice, and her parents sang in the St. John’s choir and hosted music parties in their family home. Janice became interested in ragtime in the late 1950s, and began collecting sheet music. At first, she limited her collection the works of Irving Berlin and ragtime tunes, but her passion for sheet music soon widened in scope. Her collection has grown to nearly 50,000 pieces of American popular music. Janice shared items from her collection that were either written by Omahans or were published in Omaha. Music by Maceo Pinkard, one time Omaha booking agent, music publisher, band leader and eventual composer of “Sweet Georgia Brown,” is just one of the artists in her collection. She also has the “Happy Feeling Rag” sheet music from the legendary Dan Desdunes and the “Omaha Blues” written by Effie and Charles Tyus.
Before recorded music began to enter homes in the 1920s and 1930s, sheet music was the only way for individuals to enjoy popular music in their own homes. Pianos were popular entertainment sources for middle-class homes, and the American sheet music industry thrived during the latter half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth. Popular jazz musicians borrowed heavily from African-American culture, and the industry often depended on stereotypical depictions of African Americans and African American culture in its music, lyrics, and artwork. Some of Mrs. Cleary’s items feature the stereotypical imagery of minstrelsy.

'When He Sang that Baritone He Sang Some Bear' sheet music
Description
An account of the resource

This pre-World War I song is about a baritone singer named William Washington Malone who, “Made them get so hot, they’d rag a new fox trot. The girls would Salome, they all would come and fetch the mo’ to hear old William Washington Malone”. The song continues with, “when he sang—the whole house rang…”. As the story unfolds the listener learns the fate of the baritone who becomes sad, loses his voice and by extension his livelihood. Why he became sad is not revealed within the lyrics. The song mentions singing was how Malone earned his “Jack” which is noted at the bottom of the page to mean money in the slang of that era.

The cover of this sheet music shows three women, Bess, Alice, and Florence known collectively as the Cotterill sisters. Maceo Pinkard and Otis J. Walden wrote this song and it bears a 1915 copyright. Janice Cleary who owns this amazing collection, assures us Pinkard was a booking agent and music publisher in Omaha before he moved on to New York. From there he wrote the legendary tune “Sweet Georgia Brown”. This song was dedicated to Mr. Maceo “Tony” Henike. The sheet music was published by the Dick B. Bruun Company of Omaha Nebraska and printed by Rayner Dalheim and Company Music Printers of Chicago Illinois.

An image of Bruun appears on the bottom of the cover along with the logo of his company, which includes a cartoon drawing of a mouse that predates the famous Mickey. He is wearing a suit and looking at some sheet music, which proclaims, “Croon a Bruun Time”. On the first page inside the sheet music is an advertisement for other Bruun titles that sold for 15 cents each post paid. The Ad includes another Pinkard tune, “I’m Going Back Home” and Brunn’s songs, “I’ll Be Back”, “When the Milkman Comes in the Morning”, “Howdy Henriella”, “In the Smoke of My Calabash”, “Thelma”, and “Street of Dreams”

"Army of the Cumberland," 1904
Description
An account of the resource

This poster is one in the eight great Union Armies poster/map series published by the National Tribune Co. Washington, D.C. in 1904. The Army of the Cumberland poster includes the basic dates and facts (its constitution, commanders, strength, principal battles, and the field of operations), the map of the field of operations, and the portraits of the army commanders. The signature on the poster reads, "This is to Certify, Jos. Littlefield served in the Army of the Cumberland having been a member of the Company C 102nd Regiment Illinois Infantry 20th Army Corps. (Signed) The National Tribune."

Founded in 1877 in Washington, D.C. by a pension claims agent George E. Lemon the National Tribune was one of the most influential veterans' publications in the United States, promoting the interests of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). One of the more populous Civil War veterans' organizations, the GAR was founded in 1866 in Decatur Illinois and dissolved in 1956 when the last GAR member died. The National Tribune functioned as a GAR newsletter where veterans could connect and share memories. The series of the eight great Union Armies posters started in 1904, and apparently the newspaper sent it by request to soldiers, signed with their name and regiment.

Born in Peoria County, Illinois in 1840 the recipient of this poster Joseph Littlefield served almost three years in the Civil War as a private in company C of 102nd Illinois volunteer regiment. After the war he returned to Illinois and married Hellen Crandle. In 1879 Joseph Littlefield and his family that included his mother Joanna, who was 71 at the time, came to Nebraska Clear Creek area, Sherman County to homestead. Hellen died in 1881 and six years later Joseph, now 47, married 24 year-old Lotta (Charlotte) Roberts, and had 7 more children with her, of whom only 5 survived. Littlefield moved to Aurora, Nebraska in 1904 and died there in 1911.

After the war Littlefield was very active in the local Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) chapters, always travelling to the veterans' meetings wherever he was.

The poster comes from the collection of Terri and Dave Mabon. Dave Mabon is Joseph Littlefield's great-grandson.

Subject

Written History of Early Nebraska
Description
An account of the resource
Book titled "A Flowering: A Festival: Writing and Storytelling Festival for Older Nebraskans. The story, "Grandpa Johnny" (p. 54-59), was written by Ronald M. Rockenbach in the 1970s and published on May 23, 1981 within this collection of works sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Division of Continuing Studies in Cooperation with the Nebraska Commission on Aging. About the story, Rockenbach said:

"This is a story of rural life on my grandfather's farm. I first wrote this for an assignment for Paul Olson's 'Plains Literature' class in the late 1970s. A couple of years later I submitted this story for a workshop for older Nebraskans, either written or about them. The original assignment was to pick your most favorite grandparent and tell about them. It was a labor of love as his far was sanctuary from an absent, workaholic father and a physically, mentally, suesally [illegible, possibly sexually] and emotionally abusive mother that never wanted to be a suburban housewife in Papillion, for the next 33 years.

It was a stout story to me and I asked my Shakespeare instructor, Robert Knoll to read it. I knew the descriptions exercised too many run-on sentences and alliteration that became more a test of tongue-twisters. Prof. Knoll said I had written a reminiscence, not a short story because my story lacked conflict. I simply did not include the abuse by my parents or the destruction of rural community I saw every waking day in suburban Papillion, or East Lincoln toward Eagle-Watton-Waverly. My style was influenced by Willa Cather's "My Antonia" about the richness of the prairie and the alternate time paragraphs by Faulkner's stream of conscienceness (sic). Conflict and turmoil has a sequal witing from family and unfulfilled liberal issues awareness that never landed me work or a life."

Title

"I'm a Real Kind Mama (Looking For a Loving Man) Sheet Music"
Description
An account of the resource

This 1917 “cabaret song hit”, was written and composed by Maceo Pinkard of “Sweet Georgia Brown” fame. Janice Cleary who owns this amazing collection, informs us Pinkard was a booking agent in Omaha before he moved on to New York. This song is about a woman who is, “so tired of being lonely” in a world that is, “so awfully chancy” for those who are looking for love. She says at night, “ I Doll up and meet enough” but still she has not found a man with whom she can be, “all a mama could be”.

The cover of this sheet music showcases the legendary Jewish Ukrainian American singer, Sophie Tucker, known for her brassy vocals and larger than life personality. Here Tucker is billed as, “Mary Garden of Ragtime”. The sheet music was published by Maceo Pinkard’s music publishing house in Omaha Nebraska. On the first page inside the sheet music is an advertisement for another one of Pinkard’s compositions, “The Blue Melody”. Pinkard’s Saxophone Orchestra of Omaha, known for their “syncopated walk”, is also promoted. The ad urges music lovers to look for the upcoming titles, “When He Picks that Ragtime Music”, “Teach Me that Hula Hula Dance”, “Dip Me in Your Ocean of Love”, “At that Darktown Cabaret”, and “Take Back Your Loving, I’m Through with You”

Title
A name given to the resource
"John A. Logan in 1859" Chromolithograph
Description
An account of the resource

This lithograph comes from Grace Emmett and Mary Ann Hessenflow's collection. Originally printed by the Puck magazine in 1884 and framed in Roberts's family in 1938, it alludes to the pre-Civil war debates on whether the North should continue to acknowledge the slavery in the South and not prevent its spread into the Western territories or support the rights of the free labor.

John A. Logan, portrayed in center of the lithograph holding a paper that says "No Interference with Slave-Hunters!" was a Democratic representative from Illinois in 1859, defending Douglas's position on slavery against the burgeoning Republicans Lincoln, Seward, and Sumner portrayed on the left of the lithograph. In a speech that gave him his nickname, Logan claimed that arresting fugitive slaves was the "dirty work" for Democrats to do in the "Western states." Behind Logan are the African American people persecuted by the slave-hunters, portrayed with exaggerated features, dressed as bandits. Serving as a Union Army general in the Civil War all but obliterated Logan's anti-Republican record. Yet when Logan became the Republican vice-presidential candidate in the 1884 election, the pro-Cleveland Puck printed this lithograph to remind its audience of the Logan's past. Logan and his co-runner James G. Blaine lost the election.

The lithograph comes from a family of a Civil War veteran and could have had two uses. For one, the original owner Samuel L. Roberts probably served under Logan, could have shared Logan's views both before and after the war, and kept this lithograph for the sake of having Logan's likeness. Another possibility is that the lithograph symbolized the beginning of the war in which Roberts fought and the symbol of his fighting. Since the lithograph was framed in 1938, it is also possible that the owners saw it as a representation of the horrors of slavery and a symbol of their ancestor's service to the country in the Civil War.

The lithograph's framing obscured its title and purpose and it would have been impossible to interpret its meaning without addressing the Library of Congress collection, where it can be viewed in greater detail at http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2012645248/.

"Teddy and the Bear" Mechanical Coin Bank
Description
An account of the resource

Charles Mellon gave this mechanical coin bank to the Otoe County museum so that generations of children could continue to enjoy a hundred-year-old toy. Mechanical coin banks were a post-Civil War American invention, popular among Victorians because they taught the children the value of thrift. First made in 1904, this particular coin bank embodies the story of Theodore Roosevelt and the bear. Complete with glasses and a moustache the mechanical bank Teddy aims a gun at a tree stump. Powered by a simple spring mechanism the gun shoots a coin into the stump to make the bear appear at the top. Made of cast iron, these banks are as much fun as they used to be a hundred years ago and are now valuable collecting items.
