Ice Box Tongs
Title
Ice Box Tongs
Description
Iron ice block tongs were used to pull ice blocks out of rivers in the period prior to electric, private refrigerators. These specific tongs were used by an Ice company in Holyoke, MA on the Connecticut River. They were inherited from Heather Thomas' father, after being passed down from her paternal grandfather, the original user, who died in 1969.
The family is originally from Scotland. Since moving to the United States, they spent most of their time in Massachusetts, but have lived in Nebraska for the past nine years.
