Rites of Passage

A Token of Love from Salvatore and Maria Aletta

In Little Italy, the rites of passage a person goes through in their life are times for celebration. The birth of a baby, the union of two families in marriage, or the death of a family member are major events in the community. In marriage, two families are brought together by the union of their children. Whether the marriage was arranged or was by choice, the celebration goes on. From these, a new generation of Italians are born.

Between christenings and birthdays, the birth of a baby brings family and friends together. Yet, the end of a life is a more sober affair in the community. Funerals and family gatherings bring together the community to remember the life of their beloved. These rites of passage are major events in the Little Italy community.
